Awarded upon completion of 1 course
Certificate of Fundamentals
Short, focused online programs that build foundational knowledge in core areas of public health and health leadership. Awarded for programs with approximately 6-10 hours of online video content, along with additional exercises and activities, totaling 16-24 hours of learner time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Harvard Chan ALA offers flexible learning pathways to match your goals. Short, primarily self-paced Fundamentals courses award a Certificate of Fundamentals. Longer, more in-depth courses with live components award a Certificate of Completion. You can also combine eligible courses to earn a Certificate of Specialization or an Advanced Certificate of Specialization, as outlined on this page.
Certificates of Specialization are earned by completing multiple courses within a focused subject area—typically three full courses. Some longer courses may count as two credits toward the certificate, while Fundamentals courses count as 0.5 credit. Each specialization includes a combination of required core courses and electives, allowing you to build foundational knowledge while tailoring your learning to your interests. For specific requirements, please refer to the relevant Certificate of Specialization page listed above.
To earn an Advanced Certificate of Specialization, you must first complete the requirements for the corresponding Certificate of Specialization in that track. For example, in AI in Health Care, you would complete the Certificate of Specialization before progressing to the Advanced Certificate.
The advanced credential requires additional elective coursework beyond the core certificate requirements, for a total of five full-course equivalents.
Yes, participants pursuing a Certificate of Specialization or Advanced Certificate of Specialization get 10% off their subsequent course. In other words, you will pay full price for the first course, and get 10% off all courses in the Certificate pathway thereafter.
Upon completing your first course, you will be sent a discount URL via email which you can use to enroll in your next courses at a 10% discount. Please contact enrollment@hsph.harvard.edu with any questions.
