Program Overview

Date: May 12–14, 2027 (May 12 is a virtual kick-off, with the on-campus portion on May 13-14)

Location: Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA

Certificate of Specialization eligibility:

Board service calls for a different mindset from executive leadership: directors must move from doing to governing, bringing strategic judgment, informed oversight, and an enterprise-wide perspective to the boardroom. Women on Boards: Getting On and Adding Value prepares accomplished women executives for both parts of the journey—positioning themselves to secure board opportunities and developing the skills and perspective needed to contribute effectively once appointed.

Women now hold 35% of director seats on S&P 500 boards, up from 20% in 2015. Yet board refreshment slowed in 2025, making thoughtful preparation and clear candidate positioning especially important for executives pursuing board service.

As a participant, you will explore how boards operate, what organizations seek in prospective directors, and how your own experience can translate into a compelling board value proposition. You will exam ine governance and fiduciary responsibilities, strategy, financial and risk oversight, executive and director compensation, legal and regulatory considerations, board culture, and the relationship between the board and management. You will also work on the practical elements of the board search process—from developing a board bio or resume and building a networking strategy to evaluating opportunities and conducting due diligence.

Some of the questions explored in Women on Boards: Getting On and Adding Value include:

  • What distinguishes governing from managing, and how should an experienced executive make that transition?
  • What skills, experiences, and perspectives make you a compelling board candidate?
  • How are prospective directors identified, evaluated, and selected?
  • How can you build a focused networking and board-search strategy?
  • What legal, fiduciary, financial, risk, and compliance responsibilities do directors assume?
  • How should you evaluate an organization’s mission, business model, culture, leadership, board dynamics, and strategic agenda before accepting a role?
  • What form does director compensation take, and what responsibilities does a compensation committee carry?
  • How can a new director build credibility, navigate boardroom relationships, and contribute effectively from the start?

The answers to these questions come from an experienced group of faculty, practitioners, recruiters, and highly effective board members. Through expert-led sessions, practical exercises, panel discussions, and peer exchange, Women on Boards: Getting On and Adding Value helps participants build a clearer path to board service and the judgment and confidence to add value once they arrive.

This program aims to introduce the process of joining a board to those who have minimal or no experience with boards.

Women on Boards: Getting On and Adding Value is designed for highly accomplished women executives and senior professionals from health care and related industries who are seeking positions on boards of directors or preparing for future board service. Participants should have proven business acumen and executive-level experience. At least 10 years of broad-based management and leadership experience is required, including substantial budgetary oversight.

The program is particularly valuable for those with minimal or no formal board experience who want to understand the path to board service, strengthen their readiness, and identify where their skills, experience, and perspective can add the greatest value. The program addresses board opportunities across the health care sector and beyond, including public and private companies, venture-backed and startup organizations, private equity-backed companies, and large not-for-profit organizations.
