Matthew Miller, MD, MPH, Sc.D., a general internist and medical oncologist, received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Yale University and his Doctor of Science degree in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard School of Public Health. He is currently the Associate Director of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center and an Associate Professor of Health Policy and Injury Prevention at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr Miller’s research comprises work on intentional and unintentional injuries, especially violent injuries, including homicide and suicide, and medical ethics. Dr Miller’s research has contributed to the growing evidence linking household firearm ownership and storage practices to the risk of suicide, homicide and unintentional firearm accidents. Recently, Dr Miller has focused on population based as well as individual level risk factors for suicide and has examined the relationship between suicidal behavior and several potential risk factors including physical illness, alcohol drinking frequency and quantity, body mass index, and firearm legislation.
