Virginia: Out of Kids’ Hands

Legislative Updates

Thank you for your advocacy in support of Virginia House Bill 1585. While the bill did not advance in the 2025 session after being struck from the docket in subcommittee, our collective efforts have brought much-needed attention to the dangers of unregulated weight loss and muscle-building supplements for minors. Over the past months, we’ve engaged with lawmakers, raised public awareness, and built momentum for future action. Although this setback is disappointing, it is not the end. We remain committed to protecting young people from these harmful products and will continue working to bring this issue back next session.

Thank you Virginia Delegate Baxter Ennis for championing this bill to protect young people from dangerous weight loss dietary supplements and over-the-counter diet pills.

Bill Information

Introduced by Virginia Delegate Baxter Ennis in the 2025 session, HB1585 aimed to restrict the sale of over-the-counter diet pills and dietary supplements for weight loss or muscle building to minors. The bill included safeguards for in-store and online sales, requiring age verification and restricting product access to behind-the-counter or locked displays. Additionally, it proposed civil penalties for violations, reinforcing accountability among retailers. While HB 1585 was ultimately left in the Health and Human Services Committee after being struck from the subcommittee docket, efforts to regulate these products remain ongoing, and advocates are determined to reintroduce protections in future sessions.
