Strategic Training Initiative for the Prevention of Eating Disorders (STRIPED)
Our initiative is a public health incubator, designed to cultivate novel insights and strategies for prevention. We introduce trainees to a rich array of disciplinary perspectives, methodologies, and theories and provide them with opportunities to join crosscutting collaborative teams.
California: Out of Kids’ Hands
Legislative Updates
Thank you for your immense support of California Assembly Bill 82. Unfortunately, we recently learned that the bill did not move forward in the 2025-2026 session. The legislature faced budget challenges, and we encountered strong opposition from the well-funded over-the-counter diet pill and weight-loss supplement industries.
We are now preparing for the next session and actively working to secure a new sponsor to carry this legislation forward. The groundwork laid over the past cycle has positioned us well for success: we engaged more than 30 legislative offices, including conversations with Governor Newsom’s staff, organized compelling testimonies for two hearings, and built a coalition of 22 California-based and national organizations. While the outcome this session was not what we hoped for, the visibility and momentum generated have strengthened the path ahead.
Thank you to Assemblymember Akilah Weber for her leadership and for championing this critical youth-protection bill.
Bill Information
Introduced by California Assemblymember Akilah Weber in the 2023-2024 session, Dietary supplements for weight loss and over-the-counter diet pills (AB-82) sought to protect kids from dangerously underregulated over-the-counter diet pills by restricting the sale to adults 18 years or older.
