We are excited to welcome Dr. Deborah L. O’Connor, PhD, RD and Dr. Jo-Anna Baxter, PhD to discuss “Micronutrients in Human Milk: Maternal Supplementation, Donor Milk, and Implications for Infant Growth and Development in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.”
This talk presents findings from a substudy nested within the MaPPS Trial, a large district-based, cluster-randomized controlled trial in rural Pakistan, examining whether maternal multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) from preconception through 6 months postpartum influences human milk micronutrient concentrations and long-term child outcomes. Among a subset of term-born, predominantly breastfed mother–infant dyads, the substudy evaluates effects of MMS versus standard iron–folic acid supplementation on milk iodine, vitamins A, E, B12, and folate at 3 months postpartum, as well as associations with infant growth and neurodevelopment through 5 years of age. The talk also reviews global guidance on the use of supplemental donor human milk, highlighting compositional differences from mother’s own milk and their implications for micronutrient adequacy in infant feeding programs.
Speakers’ remarks are based on their own scholarship and experience. As such, they speak for themselves, not for Harvard.
