Meet the people behind the work of the Mahalingaiah Lab.

Shruthi Mahalingaiah, MD, MS
Dr. Shruthi Mahalingaiah is a physician-scientist, Director of the Program for Environment and Women’s Health, and the Mark and Catherine Winkler associate professor of environmental, reproductive, and women’s health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Clinically, she practices as a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist at the Mass General Fertility Center, where she also serves as Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. She has been recognized as a Boston Magazine Top Doctor (2020-2026) in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
Her research focuses on how environmental and other modifiable factors shape menstrual health, ovulation, fertility, and gynecologic conditions across the lifespan—from menarche through midlife and menopause. Her group’s work established some of the first associations between air pollution and infertility, and has examined air pollution in relation to endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and menstrual irregularity. Currently, her lab is deeply engaged in understanding menstrual cycle characteristics, Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, formerly PCOS), metabolic sequelae, and how digital health and wearable technologies can advance prevention and care.
Her work is or has been supported by organizations such as the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Environmental Health Science, the Salata Institute, India Research Center, and March of Dimes and recognized with awards including the Society for Reproductive Investigation’s inaugural Carole Mendelson Award, the Endocrine Society Early Investigator Award, the Ellison Family Foundation Award, and 2025 and 2026 honors as a top 200 leader in women’s health and femtech from Women of Wearables.
Beyond academic publishing, she is committed to translating evidence for patients, clinicians, policymakers, and the public. Her research and commentary have been featured in documentaries such as Toxic Beauty and Not So Pretty, and highlighted in Plastic Detox; in major outlets including The New York Times, Financial Times, NPR/PBS affiliates, Allure, and Middlebury Magazine; and in institutional features from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Mass General Brigham, and Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as on the Harvard T.H. Chan Better Off podcast.
Her work naturally brings together public health, data science, clinical medicine, and technology, and she often collaborates with partners in tech, philanthropy, and the life sciences who are interested in advancing evidence based, inclusive innovation in women’s and reproductive health.
