Climate Change and Health: Science, Policy and Public Health in Action

Climate change is increasingly recognized as one of the defining public health challenges of the 21st century, with profound implications for human health, livelihoods, ecosystems, and social equity. Rising temperatures, declining food and water security, worsening air quality, and more frequent extreme weather events, including heatwaves, floods, cyclones, and wildfires, are contributing to a growing burden of disease morbidity and mortality. These public health threats interact with existing social, economic, and structural vulnerabilities, disproportionately affecting populations that are already at greater risk. 

To ensure continued focus and drive strategic action, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health – India Research Center launched the webinar series “Climate Change and Health: Science, Policy and Public Health in Action” which has attracted over 1,000 registrations. The series aims to convene global and national experts to examine the wide-ranging implications of climate change for health and health systems, including its effects on infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, environmental exposures, maternal and neonatal health, and mental well-being.

Discussions explore the current state of science, data gaps, prevention strategies, ongoing programs and interventions, and recommendations for strengthening public health responses in India. By fostering dialogue across disciplines and sectors, the series continues to provide a platform for examining how integrated adaptation measures and multisectoral strategies can strengthen resilient, evidence-based public health responses to climate-driven health risks.

Webinar I. Shifting Boundaries: Climate Change and Vector-Borne Diseases | October 8, 2025

Climate change is reshaping the distribution, seasonality, and transmission of vector-borne diseases in India, with implications for malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and other climate-sensitive infections. Discussions examined how evolving policy frameworks and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, can strengthen surveillance, preparedness, and public health responses to climate-sensitive disease risks. 

Webinar II. From Smog to Sickness: Understanding Air Pollution in a Changing Climate | January 28, 2026

Air pollution remains one of the leading environmental risks to health, with far-reaching impacts on respiratory, cardiovascular, maternal, neonatal, and metabolic health. Discussions focused on critical gaps in exposure assessment, air quality monitoring, and health surveillance systems, while highlighting the need for stronger evidence to inform policy and public health action.

Webinar III. Maternal Health in a Changing Climate: Strengthening Health Systems | May 14, 2026 

Climate change is intensifying risks to maternal and neonatal health through environmental exposures, physiological vulnerability, and disruptions to essential health services. Discussions highlighted that the impacts of extreme heat, air pollution, flooding, and food and water insecurity are shaped not only by clinical factors, but also by occupational conditions, maternity protection, housing security, income stability, and timely access to care.

Webinar IV. The Silent Crisis: Climate Change and Mental Well-being | July 29, 2026

As evidence on the mental health impacts of climate change continues to grow, integrating mental well-being into climate policy and public health action is becoming increasingly important. The webinar will bring together perspectives from India and globally to examine the current evidence, implementation challenges, and opportunities to advance inclusive, gender responsive mental health and psychosocial support within climate adaptation.
