Golden Lab’s Planetary Health Research Group

The Golden Lab uses planetary health approaches to examine the human health impacts of climate and environmental change. Our team is split into two, with half of us focusing on data science approaches to establishing systems of climate-smart public health, and the other half focusing on healthy and sustainable food systems, with a particular focus on aquatic foods.

Our team strives to understand the environmental and climate impacts on human health so that we can develop food system interventions and design other adaptation plans that will improve human resilience to the threats of the Anthropocene.

What We Do

Planetary health is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the interconnections between human health and the health of the Earth’s natural systems. It emphasizes that the well-being of human populations is deeply linked to the state of our environment and that sustainable management of natural resources is crucial for ensuring long-term health outcomes. Overall, planetary health seeks to ensure that both the planet and its inhabitants can thrive together, recognizing that human health is ultimately dependent on the health of our planet’s ecosystems.

Climate-smart public health enables adaptation and resilience by integrating comprehensive assessment and monitoring systems to detect climate-sensitive health conditions early and respond effectively. It enhances emergency preparedness and strengthens health infrastructure to withstand climate-related stresses, ensuring continuous service delivery during disasters. Community engagement and education raise public awareness about health impacts of climate change and encourage risk-reducing behaviors. Policy and planning integrate climate considerations into public health strategies, while sustainable practices in health facilities reduce environmental footprints. Research and innovation drive understanding of climate-health links and develop adaptive solutions, leveraging technology for improved outcomes. Prioritizing equity ensures that vulnerable populations receive the resources and services needed to cope with climate impacts, fostering a more resilient and health-secure community.

Sustainable food systems benefit planetary health by promoting food production practices that protect and regenerate ecosystems, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and conserve natural resources such as water and soil. These systems prioritize biodiversity, supporting a variety of crops and livestock that enhance resilience to pests, diseases, and climate fluctuations. By minimizing the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, sustainable food systems reduce pollution and improve soil health, contributing to cleaner air and water. Additionally, they emphasize local and seasonal food production, which reduces transportation emissions and supports local economies. These practices ensure a steady supply of nutritious food, improving public health and reducing the burden of diet-related diseases.
