Rapid Response Funding Mechanisms
Center Pilot Project grants are issued twice per year and are not intended to provide rapid funding for emergency purposes. Our Facility Access Fund mechanism can be issued rapidly, but are intended for fee-for-service laboratory services, not complete research projects.
The NIH funds the following rapid response mechanisms through other institutions:
Responding to Disasters, Time Critical Data Collection
NIEHS offers Time Sensitive Awards to support health research in response to climate disasters. These awards are intended to be reviewed and issued within 90-120 days.
In addition, the NIH has established an agreement with the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) that will support two Natural Hazard Centers, one at Colorado Boulder and the other at University of Washington. Both are known for their disaster response expertise.
These centers will provide rapid funding for timely collection of perishable data for health research in response to climate-related disasters. The partnership enhances opportunities for climate scientists to join the health researcher Community of Practice.
Colorado Boulder Natural Hazards Center
Principal Investigator: Lori Peek
The Colorado Boulder Natural Hazards Center will provide rapid awards to eligible grantees to get into the field quickly after an extreme climate event to work with communities to start health-related research. Learn more about the Natural Hazards Center
Call for Quick Response Research Awards
- Available funds will support awards in the amount of $10,000 to $50,000 each.
- Proposals for this new call will be accepted on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted.
University of Washington Natural Hazards Reconnaissance (RAPID) Facility
Principal Investigator: Joseph Wartman
The University of Washington Natural Hazards Reconnaissance (RAPID) Facility will soon offer technical instrumentation, training, and resources to researchers collecting perishable exposure and health data. Learn more about the RAPID Facility
