The JPB Environmental Health Fellowship Program’s focus is to:
- Support compassionate, rigorous scholars who conduct research in/with under-resourced communities that not only produces knowledge about the social and environmental factors that influence health, but also leads to increasing health equity.
- Promote solutions-based research that can open new lines of investigation and opportunities. Fellows are encouraged to take an action research approach that can inform policy and practices leading to a sustained change in health equity.
- Build a multidisciplinary network of faculty and research scientists across the U.S. with diverse disciplines, experiences and expertise to address environmental health challenges best solved from multiple perspectives.
- Invest in the next generation of leaders, teachers and policy makers by developing a hybrid research field that blends disciplines in order to understand the cumulative effects of multiple risk factors on health.
The JPB Environmental Health Fellowship Program was the first national program to focus on the professional development of junior faculty committed to social and environmental justice.
The Award
Through an internal grant process, funding is awarded for research projects and participation in the program’s activities, ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 over 3.5 years. Specifically, funding includes up to $50,000 in year one for 30% salary support and workshop travel, and up to $100,000 annually in years two and three for approved research projects, training, and participation in program activities.
The program offers two one-week workshops annually focused on training and career development, covering academic training in scholarship, research design, proposal development, communications, recent technologies, and leadership. Mentorship is also provided to enhance existing expertise and expand scholarship into novel domains.
Unlike other fellowship programs, JPB Environmental Health Fellows remain at their home institutions, which demonstrates their school or agency’s commitment to the program. By allowing release time from teaching and other activities, home institutions may also provide additional support, including scholarships for graduate students or postdocs and/or funding for equipment, software, or sample analysis.
Our Fellows
The JPB Environmental Health Fellows are early-career faculty in their first appointment period, frequently working in community-based research and committed to scholarship, creativity, and innovative ideas aimed at mitigating environmental and social health disparities. Unique to our program is the inclusion of senior research scientists from federal agencies (such as the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), who, although not eligible for funding, participate in training programs and complement research project development. Along with the faculty Fellows, they form a valuable collaborative network.
