Global Environmental Health 2: Water & Climate

Program Overview
Global Environmental Health 2: Water & Climate examines two of the most urgent environmental health challenges affecting populations worldwide: climate change and access to safe water and sanitation. Participants will explore the physical science of greenhouse gases and their effects on the atmosphere’s energy balance, as well as the environmental and human health impacts of climate change. The course also introduces key concepts in global water and sanitation, including historical and present-day needs, major waterborne pathogens and pollutants, routes of exposure, environmental surveillance, and strategies for water treatment and disease prevention.
This course is part of the Environmental Health Certificate of Specialization, a four-course series covering air pollution, climate change, water quality, and environmental health research methods. Participants may enroll in this course individually or complete all four courses to earn the Certificate of Specialization and gain a comprehensive foundation in environmental health.
Program Details
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the physical science of greenhouse gases and their role in the atmosphere’s energy balance
- Examine the environmental and human health impacts of climate change, including effects related to heat, migration, and worker health
- Identify major global challenges related to water and sanitation, both historically and in the present day
- Recognize key waterborne pathogens, contaminants, and emerging contaminants of concern
- Evaluate routes of exposure, environmental surveillance approaches, and interventions used to treat water and control transmission
- Search for, archive, evaluate, analyze, and apply evidence from current scientific and professional literature
- Describe the field of environmental health, including opportunities for further study and related career paths
This program is fully online in a flexible, self-paced format, designed with flexibility in mind, allowing you to tailor your learning experience to your needs. The program includes 8 hours of content organized into 10 modules, and each module contains expert-led video segments and interactive learning elements.
Participants pursuing the Environmental Health Certificate of Specialization complete three self-paced online courses and a fourth live online course that provides opportunities to interact directly with faculty and engage with fellow participants.
Global Environmental Health 2: Water & Climate is designed for:
