Additional Potential Funding Sources
Incoming Takemi Fellows are responsible for securing funding for their fellowship year. Please consult the information on estimated costs on our website. Boston is very expensive, so we encourage you to take time to ensure you have sufficient funding to cover your year. Once accepted to the Program, we work with candidates to support their search for funding.
In the past, Fellows have successfully approached funding in the following ways:
- Employer: Funding for professional development/sabbatical year;
- State/Government: Funding to conduct research and education abroad; and
- Research Theme: Funding for your discipline or idea.
Many fellows have joined the Program on a Fulbright grant. Please note that this requires applying in the Fall, one year before you begin the fellowship. In some cases, we are able to conduct an early review of your application to provide a letter of support. Please email takemi@hsph.harvard.edu as early as possible to notify the team of your intentions.
*For deadlines, please use the drop-down box in the “At a Glance” section here to contact your country’s Fulbright Commission or the public affairs section of the U.S. embassy.

JPMA Funding
We are pleased to announce a commitment from The Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (JPMA) to support the participation of Takemi Fellows from low-income countries in the Takemi Program in International Health. The JPMA has been a longtime supporter of the Takemi program annually and is making this additional gift in honor of the program’s 30th anniversary, supported by the special committee headed by Dr. Yoshitake Yokokura, President of the Japan Medical Association. The JPMA contribution will come from its member pharmaceutical companies committed to conducting research on drug development and supporting efforts combatting diseases across the globe.
The new contribution from the JPMA will enable the Takemi Program to reach out to highly qualified mid-career health professionals from low-income countries facing major healthcare challenges. By doing so, the JPMA helps the Takemi Program further its mission of facilitating research on the problems of mobilizing, allocating, and maintaining limited resources to improve health.
The funding will provide partial financial support to two Takemi Fellows per year. Candidates should indicate their interest in JPMA funding support in the online application. After our selection process is complete, we will assess eligibility for the Fellowships and select up to two JPMA-funded Fellows (from the candidates chosen to participate in the Takemi Program that year).
