Conservative policies could harm Americans’ health

November 14, 2024 – The conservative policy agenda of the second Trump administration could lead to worse health outcomes in the U.S., according to population health experts.

A Nov. 12 Guardian article explained that many policies shown to improve health in other countries have been opposed by the Trump administration and some Republican leaders, such as ones that provide universal health care, prevent gun violence, and reduce smoking.

The article cited research from Nancy Krieger, professor of social epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, that linked the conservative policy agenda with poor health outcomes. Krieger added that Trump and his supporters have talked about rolling back environmental regulations and occupational health protections, and that those types of changes would make it “very implausible there’s going to be a healthier nation.”
