Tuition and Financial Aid

This site provides details on tuition and fees, applying for financial aid, types of funding, billing policies, and more. Please review all the information carefully and contact the Office of Financial Aid if you have any questions.

Student Employment

Working either on- or off-campus can help defray the costs of your education.

Due to the demands of our academic programs, domestic students are urged to work no more than 20 hours per week. International students are limited to 20 hours a week due to visa restrictions and must obtain employment authorization before starting any job.

Positions on campus include research and teaching assistant jobs, which tend to be highly competitive. Please reach out to your individual academic department or degree program for more information.

Federal Work Study

The Federal Work Study Program (FWS), which is available only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, gives employers subsidies to hire qualified students.

Interested students must complete the FAFSA financial aid form. Eligibility is based on financial need. Please note that qualifying for FWS does not guarantee you a job or a specific income. You must find the work on your own.

Once you have filled out the FAFSA and received notification that you’re eligible:

  • Review guidelines for employer eligibility
  • Look for a job. Note that the position does not have to be listed as “Federal Work-Study” to qualify for the program.
  • Fill out an online Referral Card as soon as you secure the job.
  • Keep track of your earnings, which will come to you in the form of weekly or biweekly paychecks. If your total earnings begin to approach the FWS award amount, please contact us at financialaid@hsph.harvard.edu, as we may be able to help you increase the award amount.
  • Note that FWS can be used during the summer; more information is here
  • Read emails from your academic department and check School bulletin boards for opportunities
  • Read the Student News newsletter
  • Browse Career Connect and the Student Employment Office database
  • Reach out to employers and faculty directly to ask about openings

Research and Teaching Assistantships

Research and teaching assistantships are highly competitive and selections are made by the individual Academic Departments/Programs. Pay rates and time commitment vary by position. Students should reach out directly to the academic administrators regarding availability. These positions do not offer tuition remission or other benefits. General information, payment guidelines, and other relevant information can be found on the Office of Education’s website.
