The Financial Health Resource Group (FHRG)
Formed in the 2017-2018 academic year, the Financial Health Resource Group is comprised of administrators from student-serving offices dedicated to addressing students’ financial health needs. Recognizing that financial stress affects academics, mental health, and other crucial aspects of student life, the group adopts a holistic approach. This includes traditional financial literacy programs and broader support for issues like housing and mental health. The group will improve communication transparency, fill information gaps, and identify and develop support resources for vulnerable student populations.

Impact of the Financial Health Resource Group
The Financial Health Resource Group has played a pivotal role in addressing student needs through several impactful initiatives:
- Alleviating Unexpected Financial Challenges with the Student Hardship Fund: Originally known as the Student Emergency Fund, the Student Hardship Fund was established to provide timely financial support to students experiencing unexpected financial challenges. By addressing immediate financial needs, this fund helps students focus on their academic pursuits without the added stress of financial instability.
- Fostering Community Support through the Winter Freecycle Event: By organizing the Winter Freecycle collection and distribution event, the group has created a platform for students to access essential items at no cost. This initiative not only alleviates the financial burden of purchasing winter essentials but also promotes a sense of community and sustainability among students.
- Enhancing Food Security with the “Dean’s Dollar Meal” Initiative: Contributing to the establishment of the “Dean’s Dollar Meal,” has made affordable, nutritious meals accessible to the Harvard Chan community. This initiative addresses the growing concern of food insecurity on campus, ensuring that all students have access to healthy meal options.
- Promoting Financial Literacy through Education Sessions: Throughout the academic year, the group organizes Financial Education sessions aimed at empowering students with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage their personal finances effectively. These sessions equip students with critical financial literacy, helping them make informed financial decisions and enhance their overall financial well-being.
Through these initiatives, the Financial Health Resource Group actively supports students by addressing critical needs and fostering a supportive and resilient campus community.
