Poet-in-Residence James Shea Leads Inspiring Haiku Workshop

IID staff engaged in creativity at the Haiku Writing Workshop, led by poet James Shea, the Neafsey Lab’s writer-in-residence.
James broke down haikus written hundreds of years ago by Japanese poets Matsuo Bashō and Kobayashi Issa. He also discussed the unlikely link between science and the art of haikus—The short, un-rhyming poems incorporate observances about the natural world, echoing the scientific perspective.
Have you tried your hand at haikus? Do you find connections between art and science in your own work?
