Chemicals

Synthetic chemicals, including PFAS/forever chemicals, PCBs, phenols, phthalates, and others are increasingly the focus of research looking into the impacts on human health, as well as the environment.

The term “forever chemicals” was coined by faculty member Joseph Allen to demonstrate that the impact of many of these chemicals is not short-term; they can last forever in soil and water, and leech into the food both animals and humans eat. Understanding their impact is key to mitigating their health effects and preventing future exposures.

Research at the department of Environmental Health includes investigations into endocrine-disrupting properties of certain chemicals, which can affect hormone production, and is of particular concern during pregnancy and for young children.

Toxic chemicals can be found in everything from beauty products to non-stick pans to synthetic playing surfaces and throughout the built environment. Environmental justice work in this area also examines whether certain communities are at a higher risk for exposure to these chemicals, and how to work with vulnerable communities to mitigate that risk.
