Recent Biostats Graduate Jemar Bather PhD’23 Profiled in Jamaica Loop News

Check out this recent article from Jamaica Loop News featuring Biostat’s alum Jemar Bather PhD ’23. The article follows Bather’s path from Jamaica through his undergraduate education at Pennsylvania State University, to New York University’s applied statistics for social science research program, and most recently to Harvard’s Biostatistics Department. Helping him along this path was a passion for math, a lot of hard work and personal drive, and Bather’s deep appreciation for both networking and mentorship. Two key institutional resources were the Committee on Minorities in Statistics (COMIS) – a committee within the American Statistical Association that organizes programs such as the Diversity Workshop and Mentoring Program and StatFest, and the Fostering Diversity in Biostatistics Workshop hosted by the Eastern North American Region of the International Biometric Society. There, Bather became acquainted with another Biostats alumna Melody Goodman, currently Vice Dean for Research and Professor of Biostatistics at the NYU School of Global Public Health, who encouraged him to apply for the Harvard University doctoral program in biostatistics. Following graduation, Bather started a job as a senior scientist in biostatistics at Merck – a pharmaceutical company headquartered in New Jersey. The department is proud of Bather’s success, and looks forward to seeing the ways in which he impacts the health of underserved communities, and finds new ways to apply statistical methods to address emerging public health problems.
