Nutrition and Global Health Research and Training Program
The Nutrition and Global Health Research and Training Program is dedicated to scientific research, teaching, collaborative work, and training in nutrition and global health. Our program takes an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and conducting research about global health issues, with a special emphasis on concerns pertaining to low-and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The Ethiopia Global Infectious Disease (GID) Training Grant
The Ethiopia Global Infectious Disease Training Grant (D43TW011386) is supported by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health, and supports junior- and mid-level researchers and health college faculty from Ethiopia who are working in pediatric infectious diseases, epidemiological methods, and implementation science.
Program Format
The Global Infectious Disease (GID) Training Program supports junior- and mid-level researchers and health college faculty from Ethiopia who are working in pediatric infectious diseases, epidemiological methods, and implementation science.
The research training program is structured to provide an appropriate balance of short-, medium-, and long-term training opportunities for participants from Ethiopia in both Boston and Ethiopia. The program has four principal strategies to address pediatric infectious disease and nutrition training gaps in Ethiopia: postdoctoral training; short-term doctoral training; intensive short courses; and annual symposia and monthly seminars.
Program Goals
The program aims to build a critical mass of skilled public health researchers in Ethiopia who can design and carry out rigorous research projects and build additional capacity for research through training and mentoring. This research should have the potential for significant impact on the nutritional status and health of Ethiopians.

Fellowship Opportunities
Postdoctoral (Long-Term) Fellowships
The GID Training Program provides 18-month research training fellowship opportunities to well-qualified junior faculty and advanced researchers in Ethiopia.
This program is designed for fellows to refine methodological skills and gain substantive knowledge in nutrition and pediatric infectious disease research by participating in coursework and working with mentors from Harvard Chan School and ACIPH.
Postdoctoral trainees will participate in a one-month orientation at ACIPH, followed by six months of coursework and focused mentorship at Harvard Chan School in Boston, Mass., and 11 months at their home institution to advance their research.
Fellows are required to return to Ethiopia upon completion of training in Boston to further their research and participate in GID annual symposia and short course instruction.
Qualifications: Candidates for postdoctoral training are junior faculty and advanced researchers working at Ethiopian research institutions, including ACIPH, AAU, and Haramaya University. Applicants must have a PhD, MD, or related advanced degree. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated interest in pediatric infectious diseases, particularly nutrition, diarrheal and respiratory diseases.
Please check back at a later time for more information about the application timeline. To receive updates when more information becomes available, please email Lizi Fine (efine@hsph.harvard.edu) to be added to the program mailing list.
Summer Training at Harvard Chan
The GID Training Program provides six-week training opportunities through the Summer Session for Public Health Studies Program at Harvard Chan to well-qualified candidates who have completed or are currently enrolled in a PhD/doctoral program in medicine, public health, or a related field at ACIPH, Haramaya University, AAU, or University of Gondar. This program is designed for trainees to refine methodological skills and substantive knowledge in nutrition and pediatric infectious disease research by participating in coursework and working with mentors from Harvard Chan and ACIPH.
Short-term trainees will attend the six-week Summer Session for Public Health Studies at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and will take 7.5 credits of non-degree coursework.
Trainees will be supported to travel to Boston to participate in the coursework in person.
Upon completion of the coursework, trainees are expected to return to Ethiopia to further their research and participate in GID annual symposia and short course instruction.
Qualifications: Applicants must have completed or be currently enrolled in a PhD/doctoral program in medicine, public health, or a related field at ACIPH, Haramaya University, AAU, or University of Gondar. Applicants must be admitted into the Harvard Chan Summer Session for Public Health Studies Program via a separate application process to be considered for the GID fellowship. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated interest in pediatric infectious diseases, particularly nutrition, diarrheal and respiratory diseases.
Please check back in December 2024 for information regarding applications for the 2025 Summer Session.
