Welcome to the Gao Lab

The Gao Lab at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health investigates the complex interactions between environmental exposures (collectively known as the exposome) and human health. The exposome encompasses everything we encounter throughout our lives that interacts with our genetic makeup to influence health outcomes and disease risks.

Diagram of the Interactions of the Exposome and Health. The diagram has 3 components: 1) Health Outcomes and Disease Risk, 2) Genetic Makeup, and 3) Environmental Exposures.

Research

Our research spans multiple areas focused on decoding the human exposome and its impact on health outcomes. From developing novel analytical techniques to investigating disease-specific exposure patterns, our work aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how our environment shapes our health at populational, individual, cellular, and molecular levels.

Who we are

We are a multidisciplinary team of scientists with expertise in analytical chemistry, exposure science, molecular epidemiology, cellular biology, data science, and bioinformatics. Our lab bridges environmental and biomedical research to address critical gaps in understanding how environmental factors especially chemicals contribute to complex disease development and progression. Our collaborative approach brings together innovative technologies, computational methods, and translational insights to transform our understanding of environmental health.
