Lancet Oncology Commission on Cancer in the Commonwealth

Lancet Oncology Commission on Cancer in the Commonwealth is an initiative aimed at enhancing cancer care across Commonwealth countries. This project is driven by a commitment to address the multifaceted challenges of cancer care through comprehensive and collaborative efforts.

The primary objective of the commission is to develop informed and effective policy recommendations that can be adopted across Commonwealth nations. To achieve this, the project is supported by eight detailed research streams, which include Human Resources and Education, Health System Infrastructure for Cancer, and Current Expenditures on Cancer, among others. These research streams provide a comprehensive analysis of the existing cancer care landscape, identify gaps, and propose actionable solutions to improve cancer incidence, survival rates, and overall care quality. By integrating these research findings into policy suggestions, the commission aims to foster environments where innovative cancer care practices can thrive.

The commission is also supporting by focusing on four working groups key work streams—Care Delivery, Policy, Education, and Research Development and Innovation—to identify challenges to cancer control and to develop potential approaches to address these challenges in order to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care to achieve better health outcomes and patient experiences. Each working group is designed to tackle specific aspects of cancer care, from workforce training and public education to policy implementation and innovative financing and investments in research, development and innovation.

Ultimately, the Lancet Oncology Commission on Cancer in the Commonwealth aspires to create a sustainable impact on cancer care delivery by leveraging political and policy engagement. Through collaborative efforts and a shared Knowledge Hub, the commission facilitates the exchange of information, ideas, and best practices among commissioners and stakeholders. This holistic approach ensures that the policies and strategies developed are well-informed, practical, and capable of being implemented effectively across diverse healthcare systems within the Commonwealth, thereby improving the lives of cancer patients globally.
