Federal Loans
US Citizens, US Permanent Residents, Citizens of Freely Associated States, Refugees, and Persons granted Asylum. International students are not eligible for federal aid.
For domestic students, we recommend that federal loan programs be considered first and fully used as a resource based on the annual/aggregate loan limits before borrowing from private loan programs.

Direct Unsubsidized Loans
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Must be enrolled at least half-time (10 credits per term required for your degree).
- Can borrow up to $33,000 maximum per academic year; $224,000 aggregate lifetime limit.
- Fixed interest rate of 8.08%. For prior year rates, please visit this Federal Student Aid page.
- The origination fee for loans disbursed prior to October 1, 2024 is 1.057%. This fee is automatically deducted from the loan prior to disbursement.
- Loan is unsubsidized, meaning interest begins accruing at disbursement and continues accruing during the school year. If you choose not to pay the interest while you are in school or during other grace periods, that interest will be added to the principal amount of your loan when you begin repayment.
- Master Promissory Note (MPN) and entrance interview are required for disbursement and can be completed online.
- Exit counseling is required for all graduating students as well as those whose enrollment falls below half-time status.
For more detailed information, visit the Federal Student Aid website.

Loan Payment Deferment
Federal loans automatically defer payment while you are enrolled in school. Most such deferments require that you be enrolled at least half-time in a degree-granting program. At Harvard Chan School, that means you must be enrolled in at least 10 credits in the fall and the spring semester. To be considered at least half-time in the summer, you must be enrolled in at least 7.5 credits.
Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School.
In addition to our degree programs, we offer highly targeted executive and continuing education, directed and taught by Harvard faculty.
