Project Team
Dr. Anuska Kalita is a global health systems expert with over 20 years of experience in the health sector. She is currently the Director of India Health Systems at Harvard University. Prior to Harvard, Dr. Kalita has worked in roles ranging from research and implementation to grant-making and policy. She has a MPH and DrPH from Harvard University.
Dr. Kalita has undertaken large scale health systems and policy research, focusing on health financing, quality of care, primary health care, and political economy of health. She has over 35 publications in leading journals like The Lancet, BMJ, Health Policy & Planning, and Social Science & Medicine, and WHO manuals for health policy.
At Harvard, Dr. Kalita has taught for courses on Health Systems Strengthening, Comparative Health Systems, Financing, Methods for Health Systems Assessment, and Political Economy. She has designed and led this Health Systems Capacity Building Program since 2021. She has also been facilitating the National Flagship Course on Health System Strengthening in India for senior IAS officers since 2017.
In addition to these positions, Dr. Kalita has been involved in designing landmark health policies, notably India’s National Health Policy (2017), where she participated in the Ministry of Health’s Task Force on Primary Healthcare, and the national ASHA Program. Currently, Dr. Kalita is joint lead author of the Lancet Commission on India.
Maya Subramanian (she/her) is a Program and Research Assistant at GHP. She recently obtained her B.A. from Brandeis University, studying Health Policy and International Studies, with a focus on global health development initiatives. Her research interests include health system management and quality assurance, global epidemiology and nutrition, and the efficacy of initiatives for marginalized populations.
