Applying for Harvard Chan School grants and scholarships
We encourage eligible master’s and DrPH students to apply for Harvard Chan scholarships, regardless of financial need. These grants are funded in part by gifts from generous donors.
All students in the MPH-45, MPH-65, MPH-Generalist, MPH-Epi, SM-42.5, SM-60, SM-80 and DrPH programs are eligible for Harvard Chan scholarships, including international students.
Students in the Master in Health Care Management (MHCM) program, the SM summer-only program, and the MPH-45 summer-focused programs are not eligible for school support.
After you have submitted your SOPHAS application, you should receive emails from the Admissions Office and the Financial Aid Office with instructions on how to log into the MyFinaid system and apply for a Harvard Chan Grant/Scholarship.
If you don’t see these, please check your spam folder. Also, make sure your contact information is up to date in SOPHAS.
The application opens in early December. Please contact our office if you have not received these emails by mid-December.
We strongly encourage all students, both domestic and international, to fill out the short Harvard Chan Grant/Scholarship Application promptly. School administrators will use the application to determine your eligibility for multiple opportunities, in some cases including departmental training and research grants.
Please be aware that it may take 5 or more business days after you submit the FAFSA for us to acknowledge receipt in your MyFinaid portal. If you submit it when our office is closed for winter break, we will not acknowledge it until early January.
The Harvard Chan Grant/Scholarship Application is a short form that will collect general information on your previous year’s income, as well as savings and assets.
If you choose to submit an essay on overcoming disadvantage and adversity for the Louis & Ida Tatelman Award, you can do so through MyFinaid . First, submit the scholarship application form. Then log out, log back in and navigate to “documents and messages,” where you will find the upload button.
The application deadline is January 8th. It is a firm deadline; we cannot accept any late applications. This is your only opportunity to apply for a Harvard Chan Grant/Scholarship, even if you’re applying to a multi-year program.
You will be notified of any scholarships or grants when you receive your admissions decisions.
The most common reason for receiving a system error is that you have neglected to respond to a required question. You must answer all questions marked with a (*) as required before submitting.
If you have trouble with the HarvardKey login, password, or two-factor authentication, please contact the IT Helpdesk at helpdesk@hsph.harvard.edu or (617) 432-4357(HELP).
If you still can’t submit the form, please send a screenshot of the error message to our office at financialaid@hsph.harvard.edu and we will respond as soon as possible.
- Joint JD/MPH Program with Harvard Law School (HLS) – Please reach out to Student Financial Services at HLS.
- MD/MPH Combined Degree Program with Harvard Medical School (HMS) – Harvard Chan School will use the needs assessment conducted by HMS to consider admitted MPH students in this program for scholarships. You do not need to fill out the Harvard Chan Grant/Scholarship Application. Domestic MD/MPH students who are interested in federal aid will need to complete FAFSA. Our Federal School Code is E00214 (select Harvard University School of Public Health).
Financial Aid Application Timeline
Please watch this short video giving an overview of the financial aid application timeline:
Federal Student Aid
We encourage domestic MPH, SM, and DrPH students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to apply for federal student aid, in the form of federal loans or work study. U.S. citizens, permanent residents, citizens of freely associated states, refugees, and persons granted asylum are all eligible.
Students in our MPH-EPI, Master in Health Care Management, Summer-Focused and Summer-Only degree programs and non-degree programs are not eligible for federal aid.
International students are also not eligible for federal aid and should not complete the FAFSA.
Our federal student code on the FAFSA is E00214. Select Harvard University School of Public Health. It’s important that you use the correct code; otherwise, we will not receive your FAFSA.
We strongly recommend that students complete the FAFSA by Jan. 15 so we can provide complete financial aid information with admission decisions.
