Monica Ghabrial, PhD

Assistant Professor of Health Psychology, Algoma University

Monica Ghabrial, PhD (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Health Psychology at Algoma University. Her research primarily examines stress, health, and resilience among sexual and gender minority (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans) Black people, Indigenous people, and people of Color (BIPOC) – with an occasional focus on issues specifically concerning immigrant health and bisexuality/plurisexuality. For three years, Monica was a CIHR Postdoctoral Fellow in Public Health, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics, working in the area of transgender and non-binary health across Canada and the US. She completed her MA and PhD at the University of Toronto, where she developed and validated the first measure of positive attitude toward identity for Queer BIPOC, the Queer People of Colour Identity Affirmation Scale, and used this scale to examine the relationship between identity affirmation and cardiovascular reactivity to stress within this population.
