Biography
Dr. Serhat Yildirim obtained his Medical Degree from Ghent University Medical School in Belgium. As a Fulbright alumnus and Fayat Scholar, he completed a Master of Medical Sciences (MMSc) in Global Health Delivery at the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School (Class of 2025).
Currently, Dr. Yildirim is a Research Associate at the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University. His research focuses on mental healthcare in war-affected and resource-limited settings, particularly among children, adolescents, and youth across the Middle East and North Africa region. Under the supervision of Dr. Theresa S. Betancourt, he has conducted research on mental healthcare for former child soldiers in Iraq. Under the guidance of Dr. Mary T. Bassett, his work also examines reparations as a public health intervention.
His broader interests center on advancing health equity for the most vulnerable populations globally, including refugees and displaced communities, through the lens of social medicine.
Within the Harvard community, Dr. Yildirim is an active member of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Postdoctoral Association and previously served as President of the Harvard University Belgian Student Society (HUBSS).
Dr. Serhat Yildirim has also served as a Teaching Fellow for the International Humanitarian Response course at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Research Writing course at Harvard Medical School.
