Biography
Maryam Kazemi, RD, MSc, PhD, CPT, is a Research Scientist at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School. Her research examines the etiopathogenesis and long-term consequences of complex reproductive and cardiometabolic diseases, with a particular focus on polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS, formerly known as PCOS), obesity, and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). She uses PMOS as a model to study how hormonal traits, behavior, and genetic predisposition intersect to shape cardiovascular risk across the life course. As a member of the International PCOS Network, Dr. Kazemi contributed to the 2023 International Evidence-Based Guideline for the Assessment and Management of PCOS.
Dr. Kazemi’s work spans randomized clinical trials focused on lifestyle interventions, clinical phenotyping, and large population-based prospective cohorts. Her research has characterized reproductive and cardiometabolic variation in PMOS across populations and examined outcomes extending into midlife. She has also examined how diet, broader lifestyle behaviors, and environmental exposures relate to reproductive health and downstream cardiometabolic sequelae. This clinical and population-based foundation informs her current work on the pathways linking reproductive dysfunction to cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Kazemi is establishing a research program that integrates behavioral and multi-omics (genomics, metabolomics) data to determine whether, why, and how cardiometabolic risk varies across diverse PMOS populations and where prevention may be most effective. Over the past years, she has led multiple projects in prospective population-based cohorts and interventional trials, including the Nurses’ Health Study cohorts, Project Viva, and the Environment and Reproductive Health (EARTH) Study, among others. Her research provides the phenotypic, genomic, behavioral, and longitudinal evidence needed to investigate PMOS and cardiometabolic comorbidities across the life course.
Dr. Kazemi's earlier research has been recognized at the national level by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA T32 fellowship awards. Her honors include the Women in Endocrinology Young Investigator Award and the Endocrine Society’s Future Leaders Advancing Research in Endocrinology Award. She is now principal investigator of an NIH/NHLBI K01 award and an American Heart Association Career Development Award supporting her research on the behavioral and genetic architecture of CVD in PMOS.
