Reappointments
Reappointments of current roles in the Research Scientist track require a simplified list of materials than a first appointment or promotion. Reappointments are voted on by the RSRC in the same fashion as new appointments and promotions with a focus on continued advancement in their respective roles.
The requirements for packets needed to reappoint research scientists are as follows:
- Letter from the department chair or center director requesting the reappointment and briefly describing the incumbent’s current research and responsibilities in the context of the criteria for appointment
- A current copy of the research scientist’s CV
- The CV should contain a grant funding section; if the scientist is a PI or Co-PI, information should include the dollar amount and length of the grant in addition to the researcher’s role on the grant
- Peer-reviewed publications should be listed separately from other publications; publications not yet accepted should not be listed

- An activities statement that outlines the research scientist’s’ duties, responsibilities, and plans for future research
- Supporting financial information including: proposed salary/increase, costing strings, and fringe
Promotions
Promotions within the Research Scientist track are awarded to appointees who become increasingly recognized for their work in their field, and who take on more leadership roles and grant work. The grid “Non-faculty Research Titles” (PDF)highlights the expectations for advancement to the levels of the Research Scientist track.
Faculty wishing to recommend the promotion of a research scientist within the career track should consult with their department administrator for information on the procedures to be followed.
Promotion packets submitted should align with the grid’s expectations for promotion to the next level and clearly show the scientist’s advancement in their field.
* The requirements for a promotion packet are as follows:
- Job description (should provide detailed description of activities the research scientist will be engaged in during the proposed appointment)
- Letter from department chair or center director endorsing the appointment and should indicate relevance/value to the department’s strategic goals
- Three letters of recommendation (letters may be solicited from peers and mentors but not from trainees
- Curriculum vitae: a current copy of the candidate’s CV
- peer-reviewed publications should be listed separately from other publications; publications not yet accepted should not be listed
- the CV should contain a grant funding section; Candidate’s role in grant should be clearly stated. If PI (or Co-PI), please include the grant’s direct cost dollar amount and length of the grant.
- It is imperative that CVs be in Chan School format. (Please note that review packets without properly formatted CVs will result in delays). Click here for the School’s preferred CV format

- Supporting financial information including: proposed salary/increase, costing strings, and fringe
n.b. Research Scientist and Senior Research Scientist appointments are for three years. Principal Research Scientist appointments are five years in length.
