Jorge E. Chavarro, Dean for Academic Affairs

Jorge E. Chavarro is the dean for academic affairs at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He is also professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the School, and professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Chavarro’s research focuses on understanding how nutritional, lifestyle and metabolic factors impact human reproduction and reproductive milestones throughout the life course, and how these events impact other aspects of health.

He is principal investigator of the Nurses’ Health Study 3, an ongoing, open, web-based prospective cohort study of more than 50,000 women. He also leads nutrition research within the EARTH Study, which follows couples undergoing infertility treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital, and is co-investigator of Project Viva, where he focuses on women’s health throughout the life course.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine awarded Dr. Chavarro the prestigious Ira and Ester Rosenwaks New Investigator Award in 2014. He served as chair of the Pregnancy and Neonatology study section of the National Institutes of Health and currently serves on the Research Program Review Panel for the World Health Organization’s Human Reproduction Programme.

At the School, Dr. Chavarro has held many leadership roles, including co-chairing Faculty Council (2019-2020) and serving on the Standing Committee on Appointments, Reappointments, and Promotions, the Committee for Educational Policy, and the Working Group on Standards and Principles for Review of Instructors. He also served on the University’s Open Inquiry and Constructive Dialogue Working Group. In 2025, President Alan Garber appointed him to the newly formed Faculty Advisory Council.

Dr. Chavarro holds a medical degree from the National University of Colombia as well as a Doctor of Science in Nutrition and Epidemiology and a Master of Science in Epidemiology from Harvard Chan School, where he also completed a post-doctoral research fellowship.
