The worst ultra-processed foods for metabolic health

When it comes to metabolic health, some ultra-processed foods are worse than others, according to experts. Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, was one of the researchers quoted on the topic in a Nov. 26 Today article.

As Willett explained, metabolism is the “biological machinery” that helps keep the body running efficiently, and it won’t run well without the right mix of fuel in the diet. Over time, poor dietary choices can disrupt a person’s metabolism, leading it to burn fewer calories and store more fat—ultimately raising the risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

Ultra-processed food is a broad category that includes healthier items such as whole grain bread and unsweetened yogurt. But other types of ultra-processed products can be very high in salt, added sugar, and saturated fat. Experts quoted in the article noted six that can be particularly harmful to metabolic health: sugar-sweetened beverages, processed meats, packaged sweets, packaged snack foods, frozen entrees or microwavable meals, and fast food.

The article noted that when it’s not possible to eat a healthy home-cooked meal, choosing packaged food or drinks that are low in sodium and sugar and higher in fiber can make a meaningful difference for metabolic health.
