Madeline Farringer (G5, Dvorin Lab and Wirth Lab)
Where are you from and what do you enjoy most about your hometown?
I am originally from Freeport, Illinois, a small mid-western town surrounded by corn fields. My favorite part of my hometown is spending time with my family and chasing around my niece who was born a month after I moved to Boston!
Q: What is your research focused on?
My research is focused on the parasite that causes malaria, Plasmodium falciparum. I am interested in how the parasite is able divide inside of red blood cells and am searching for inhibitors of the unique process of cell division.
Q: What is your favorite part of your research?
My favorite part of my research has been the moments of discovering something new about the world and this strange parasite. It is also wonderful to be a part of labs where you get to experience everyone making these discoveries and celebrating together!
How do you relax when you’re not working?
I love music and singing! I go to as many concerts as I can! I also appreciate the great indoors: tea, board games, house plants, dinner parties, and video games!
Tell us about an activity outside of the lab you’re involved in and why it’s important to you
I have been a peer mentor for the past three years and it is so wonderful! I think it is a great program to establish connections across the cohorts and provide support for students early in their PhD.
