Experts: Try to avoid painkillers before or after COVID vaccine

Experiencing mild fever, chills, headache, or fatigue from the COVID-19 vaccine means that your immune system is kicking in the way it’s supposed to, according to experts. They advise trying to avoid painkillers in order to ensure the strongest possible immune response.

In a February 8, 2021, article in Elemental, experts said that while it’s not yet known if painkillers can interfere with the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, it’s possible, so it’s best to skip painkillers if you can.

“Don’t use them beforehand,” advised Michael Mina, assistant professor of epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. And after getting the vaccine, “try very hard not to.”
