Faculty elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health faculty members Sara Bleich and Wendy Garrett are among the nearly 250 members elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the academy announced on April 23.
Bleich is professor of public health policy in the Department of Health Policy and Management. She is also the inaugural vice provost for special projects at Harvard University and a faculty member at Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She is a policy expert and researcher who specializes in diet-related diseases, food insecurity, and racial inequality. Bleich served in the Biden Administration as the director of nutrition security and health equity at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service.
Garrett is Irene Heinz Given Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases in the Departments of Immunology and Infectious Diseases and Molecular Metabolism at Harvard Chan School, and a professor in the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Her research focuses on the interplay between the gastrointestinal immune system and the gut microbiota in health, inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal cancer. Garrett’s research team has identified specific species, pathways, and metabolites made by the microbiota that influence health and disease states.
Since 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences has honored excellence and convened leaders from across disciplines to examine new ideas, address issues of importance, and work together “to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.”
