Abigail Frey Wins Harvard Three Minute Thesis Competition

We are excited to share that Abigail Frey – G5, BPH student working in the Fortune Lab – has won the prestigious Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition!

The 3MT competition challenges researchers to present their work in a clear, engaging, and concise way in just three minutes. Abigail impressed the judges with her ability to communicate her innovative research on tuberculosis (TB) in a compelling and accessible way.
Abigail’s research centers on how TB bacteria evade antibiotic treatment and how those insights can be translated into better diagnostic tools. By improving the speed and accuracy of TB diagnosis, her work aims to help prevent the spread of drug-resistant infections and improve patient outcomes around the world.
Sarah Fortune, Sarah Fortune, Chair of the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, highlighted the importance of Abigail’s research:
Abigail’s research is trying to define the novel antibiotic escape mechanisms by combining population genomics and bacterial genetics — which then helps build the roadmap for genetic diagnostics for patient use. The goal is to help everyone with TB be accurately and quickly diagnosed and treated so that they do not progress to ever more resistant and intractable forms of the infection.
Congratulations to Abigail on this incredible achievement!
