Program Overview
Advancing Health Equity Through Leadership Development
Health equity remains one of the most urgent and persistent challenges in health care today. Disparities across age, geography, diagnosis, and socioeconomic status continue to impact morbidity, mortality, and quality of life for millions of individuals. These inequities are, as defined by the World Health Organization, “unfair and avoidable or remediable.” Without focused attention and reliable data, these gaps will only widen—driving up costs and harming us all.
Leadership Development to Advance Equity in Health Care equips you to recognize, address, and dismantle these disparities, empowering you to lead change in your organization and community. Health equity is not only a moral imperative, it’s also a business one. When disparities persist, everyone suffers.
Traditional medical education in the U.S. and Canada often overlooks how systemic racism and outdated policies perpetuate inequity. This program fills that gap by exploring the current state of the U.S. health care system and the latest research on social determinants of health. You will:
- Examine how policies and systems disproportionately impact vulnerable populations
- Analyze identity-related challenges such as the “minority tax,” imposter syndrome, implicit bias, and secondary stress
- Learn to lead equity-focused conversations that drive organizational change
Faculty includes Dr. Joan Reede, Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership at Harvard Medical School, and Dr. David Williams, a globally recognized expert on social influences on health, along with other leading clinicians and scholars. They will lead skill-based sessions, helping you develop the leadership tools to identify and reform biased policies, foster inclusive environments, and champion health equity. Because health equity isn’t a niche issue—it’s an “everybody conversation.”
After you complete this dynamic leadership development program, you will:
- Understand how you fit into your organization’s staffing and know how to identify allies, mentors, and partners who can help you transform your organization from within
- Have a deep understanding of the bias that negatively impacts health equity and its history in the American health care system
- Be empowered to facilitate crucial conversations around health equity that can affect change in your organization and community
Objectives & Highlights
- Deepen your knowledge of health to include social determinants; a reflection on how American historical factors and political agendas shape power and result in health inequities; and an identification of specific, tangible opportunities to operationalize strategies to advance health equity in your work or practice.
- Gain a greater understanding of the innovative leadership frameworks (such as adaptive leadership, authentic leadership, and transformative leadership) required to make substantial and lasting changes in an organization.
