Program Overview

Artificial intelligence is maturing rapidly across industries, yet healthcare continues to face challenges in realizing its full potential. At the same time, health systems around the world are grappling with aging populations, rising expectations, and escalating costs. Innovation with AI in Health Care offers a strategic roadmap to help organizations address these pressures and evolve into innovative, AI-enabled, 21st-century institutions.

A key barrier to AI adoption in healthcare is a lack of understanding among healthcare leaders. Many are unfamiliar with both the technical foundations of AI and the practical strategies required for successful, scalable implementation. As a result, the potential of AI to deliver value to patients, clinicians, and organizations often goes unrealized—leading to wasted resources and missed opportunities. This course addresses that gap by teaching the fundamentals of applied AI from a business perspective, equipping decision-makers with the intuition needed to avoid common pitfalls.

Innovation with AI in Health Care is designed to empower healthcare executives to strategically integrate and utilize AI tools to enhance their job functions. Participants will also learn to critically assess current AI technologies and anticipate future developments relevant to the healthcare industry, gaining actionable insights into the role of AI across the payer, provider, and pharmaceutical sectors. In addition, participants will be introduced to “vibe coding” as a rapid prototyping methodology for healthcare product development, complete with practical demonstrations from leading experts.

This course builds on Responsible AI for Health Care: Concepts and Applications. While each program can be taken independently, completing three healthcare AI courses in our portfolio earns the AI in Health Care Certificate of Specialization.

For those who have taken earlier versions of Applied AI in Health Care, this updated program reflects the latest developments in AI for healthcare, with fresh group projects and collaborative learning opportunities. Frequently Asked Questions

Innovation with AI in Health Care is a live online program from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Executive and Continuing Education that helps healthcare leaders strategically capture AI’s value and lead digital transformation.

Over four live sessions, participants explore how AI can improve operations, patient outcomes, and innovation across payer, provider, and pharmaceutical settings. The course blends strategic frameworks, real-world examples, and rapid prototyping exercises—helping leaders turn AI potential into organizational impact.

Innovation with AI in Health Care is designed for senior managers, clinicians, and executives who are developing or implementing AI strategies and want to understand both the current landscape and the future of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

Participants come from diverse sectors, including healthcare delivery, healthcare technology, primary care systems, payers, and government agencies

You will learn applied AI from a business perspective. By the end of the program, you will be able to:

  • Strategically integrate and utilize AI tools to enhance job functions
  • Understand and deploy “vibe coding” for rapid prototyping
  • Develop a nuanced understanding of how to manage AI projects within a healthcare context
  • Critically assess current AI technologies and anticipate future developments relevant to healthcare
  • Provide actionable insights into the role of AI across the payer, provider, and pharmaceutical sectors

The full agenda is available here. .

You do not need a technical background, but a foundational understanding of AI concepts or prior exposure to applied AI is recommended for Innovation with AI in Health Care.

If you are newer to the field, consider enrolling in Responsible AI for Health Care: Concepts and Applications first, or take time for self-study or practical experimentation before enrolling. This preparation will help you engage more deeply with the advanced material in this course.

While many AI courses focus on primarily the technical aspects of healthcare AI, this program also includes sessions on leadership, strategy, and innovation. Participants learn how to identify AI opportunities, manage implementation challenges, and create measurable value in complex health systems.

You’ll also gain exposure to vibe coding—a practical, hands-on framework for rapid healthcare product prototyping taught by leading experts in the field.

While real-world experience with AI projects is highly valuable, it often doesn’t provide the structured frameworks, strategic perspective, and cross-sector insights needed to lead innovation at scale.

Harvard’s Innovation with AI in Health Care program offers a guided, high-impact learning experience that helps leaders avoid common pitfalls and accelerate digital transformation. You’ll engage directly with faculty and peers who are implementing AI across hospitals, payers, and biotech organizations—gaining lessons you won’t find in isolated workplace projects.

Participants leave with a strategic toolkit, actionable methods for assessing and managing AI initiatives, and the confidence to shape their organization’s innovation roadmap. The program is a smart investment if you want to move from experimentation to executive-level AI leadership

The program features Harvard faculty and healthcare AI innovators who bring real-world experience in data science, clinical innovation, and technology leadership.

The course is designed and directed by Trishan Panch (CEO of LUNRStudio; Executive Chair and Chief Strategy Officer of Lumin Health, Co-founder of Wellframe) and Heather Mattie (Lecturer on Biostatistics, Co-Director of the Health Data Science Master’s Program, and Director of EDIB Programs at the Harvard Chan School). They will be joined by several prominent healthcare leaders as well as technical AI experts.

This course is part of the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health’s Executive Education AI in Health Care Certificate of Specialization. Completing this and two other AI courses (Responsible AI for Health Care: Concepts and Applications and Implementing Health Care AI in Clinical Practice) earns the certificate, showing advanced skills in healthcare AI leadership.

All individual Harvard Chan Executive Education programs also award a Certificate of Participation upon completion.

Note: If you have previously completed a healthcare AI course at Harvard Chan School, or enroll in Responsible AI for Healthcare in February 2026, you will be eligible to earn the Certificate of Specialization with 2 courses, per the prior criteria.
