Lu Tian to receive the 2024 Lagakos Distinguished Alumni Award
We are extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Lu Tian, ScD ’02, Professor of Biomedical Data Science and Professor of Statistics, will be the recipient of the 2024 Lagakos Distinguished Alumni Award!
Dr. Tian is scheduled to give an in-person lecture at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health on Thursday, October 17th, 2024 in Kresge G2 at 4:00 PM.
Dr. Tian’s pathbreaking research in survival analysis, predictive modeling, and precision medicine, have greatly contributed to the advancement of the field of biostatistics. The methodologies Dr. Tian has developed are not only theoretically innovative but also practically useful, improving the validity and efficiency of statistical inference.
After receiving his doctoral degree from the Department of Biostatistics in 2002, Dr. Tian went on to work as a postdoctoral fellow of the late Dr. Stephen Lagakos. He became a faculty member at Northwestern University before joining Stanford University in 2008. Dr. Tian is currently a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Data Science and, by courtesy, the Department of Statistics at Stanford. He also serves as Associate Chair of Faculty Development at the School of Medicine, and the Director of the Data Management and Statistical Core in the Stanford Alzheimer Disease Research Center.
Dr. Tian has made substantial contributions to the medical field as an extremely valuable statistical collaborator of his clinical colleagues, actively involved with the design and analysis of epidemiological studies and clinical trials. He has more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, has published highly cited papers on methods such as gene set enrichment analysis, and has served as the co-editor of Advanced Medical Statistics (2016).
Dr. Tian has served as an associate editor for Statistics in Medicine, Biometrics, Chance and several other journals. He has organized invited sessions for major statistical conferences including the JSM and ENAR, and has served as the ICSA applied symposium short course committee chair as well as the JSM program committee member. He was also the chair for the continuing education and short course committee for the ASA Bay area chapter. In 2022, Dr. Tian was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. This honor reflects his significant impact on the field of statistics and his ongoing contributions to biomedical data science.
Beyond his research, Dr. Tian is deeply involved in teaching and mentoring students at Stanford. An extremely generous individual who unselfishly assists his colleagues with their career development, he provides guidance and support to students in the Department of Biomedical Data Science and the Department of Statistics, helping to shape the next generation of researchers and data scientists.
In summary, Dr. Lu Tian’s commitment and dedication to the field is reflected not only in his personal achievements but his desire to help advance medical research and provide higher quality medical care for those in need
