Alumni in Action: Thomas Mote, MPH ’04

“While working on my MPH at the School from 2003 to 2004, I used the month of January to go with a group of undergraduates from my alma mater, DePauw University, on a health project to Ghana.

I saw how much could be done with so little and this changed my focus from health care management to global health.

Then as an adjunct I taught an introductory global health class at DePauw and Butler universities where I occasionally had visiting speakers. This “proof of concept” led to incorporating a not-for-profit, Tumaini Global Health, that has scaled to supporting global health education at six small liberal arts colleges. We do this by supporting speakers including two of my HSPH professors, Nancy Kane and Richard Siegrist; having a biannual Symposium; funding students on global health experiences; and finding board members who align with our vision—Dr. Thomas Burke of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is one of them.

We just sent out invitations to 18 additional schools to join those we now support, so I’m looking forward to expanding our programming.”
