Eric J. Beyer

Biography

Eric J. Beyer is President and Chief Executive Officer of Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children. Mr. Beyer is a seasoned health care executive who is well -known and respected for his ability to align the goals of hospitals and physicians so that they can provide high quality, cost effective care in a reform environment.

Mr. Beyer assumed the CEO role from his position as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization, Inc. (Tufts MCPO). In that role, he was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the 550-physician faculty practice and the 415-bed academic medical center’s entire ambulatory operation. When Mr. Beyer began his tenure at Tufts MC, he was charged with merging its two separate physician groups into one highly-functioning physicians’ organization. He grew that organization nearly 20 percent in almost six years and has made Tufts Medical Center an employer of choice for talented and respected physicians from academic medical centers across the country.

Recruited to Tufts MC in 2006 by retired CEO and President Ellen Zane, Mr. Beyer worked side-by-side with Mrs. Zane on strategic initiatives to improve the financial standing and long-term viability of the principal teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine. Major achievements include the resurgence of the Floating Hospital for Children, expansion of Tufts MC’s research enterprise and the attainment of an investment-grade bond rating.

Mr. Beyer has been instrumental in building Tufts Medical Center’s community physician network, New England Quality Care Alliance (NEQCA), and continues to support these organization’s growth and efforts to redesign health care. Physicians in the NEQCA network, which is now the second largest in Massachusetts, use Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children as their preferred tertiary and quaternary hospital. Mr. Beyer’s leadership helped develop the network from 120 community physicians at its founding to 930 community physicians. The entire network, including the Tufts MC faculty practice, totals nearly 1,500 physicians.

Mr. Beyer’s deep understanding of the Massachusetts health care market and his rapport with physicians and industry leaders has also been critical to the execution of Tufts Medical Center’s Distributed Academic Medical Center™ model. Through this model Tufts MC now partners with seven community hospitals to keep care local whenever possible and to provide cost-effective academic medical care at Tufts MC and Floating Hospital for Children when necessary.

As a result of the strong partnership between the NEQCA, the Tufts MC Physicians Organization, and the hospital, Tufts MC and its physicians have achieved a degree of alignment and integration that hospitals and physicians nationwide strive to achieve. This strength positions the organization well under Mr. Beyer’s leadership for the new reform environment. Standard & Poor’s recently published a paper citing Tufts Medical Center and NEQCA as an example of a system that is preparing well for the industry’s transition to accountable care organizations.

Prior to joining Tufts Medical Center, Mr. Beyer served as Chief Operating Officer of Partners Community HealthCare, Inc. (PCHI), one of the largest physician networks in the country and includes the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and several community providers. He was responsible for oversight of operations, including practice management, information systems, finance and the services supporting network physicians and hospitals.

Mr. Beyer received a Bachelor of Science degree from LeMoyne College, and received his MBA from the State University of New York at Albany. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Asian American Civic Association (AACA).
