What is Fireworks?

The Harvard Chan AI Glossary

In our classes, we often pause to explain the ideas behind AI and the language used to describe it. These posts grew out of those conversations. They’re for anyone who would like to understand AI better, with no technical background assumed.

Fireworks is a service that provides access to AI models running on hosted computing infrastructure. Hosted means that the calculations take place on computers operated by a provider rather than necessarily on the user’s own device. A developer can connect an application to the service instead of operating every part of the model-serving system independently.

Inference is the use of a trained model to produce a response or prediction. Training is the earlier process of adjusting the model’s internal settings using examples. Fireworks provides model-inference services and related developer capabilities; it should not be confused with one particular model family.

An API, or application programming interface, specifies how an application sends a request and receives the result. For example, a writing tool could send a paragraph and an instruction to a supported model through Fireworks, then display the returned revision. The writing tool, hosting service and model developer are separate roles.

That distinction matters for both performance and information handling. The model determines some aspects of the response, while the serving arrangement affects factors such as availability and response time. The application determines which text is sent and how the result is used. A claim about one layer does not automatically apply to the others.

A provider may offer different arrangements for different customers. One organization’s contract or configuration does not establish the terms, protections or suitability of every account. Check the arrangement you would actually use.

For an illustrative evaluation, examine the complete path: what leaves the application, which service processes it, which model runs and what is retained afterward. An appropriate arrangement depends on the actual account and service terms, not merely on the fact that a known provider is involved.

Fireworks belongs in the glossary because model access is a choice distinct from model capability. A team may use a model through different hosting arrangements. Understanding who develops it, who runs it and who controls the application makes those arrangements easier to compare and govern.
