Biography
As Chief Technology Officer for Canada Health Infoway (Infoway), Mr. Giokas is the corporation’s lead for the definition of health information and communications technology solutions. He heads Infoway’s Emerging Technology Group. In that capacity he is responsible for the new Tech Watch agenda, for Infoway’s International Advisory Services, and for the Health System Use (secondary use of data) agenda. Mr. Giokas oversees the architecture aspects of Infoway’s new EHR investment areas as well as the tracking, evaluation, and promotion of enabling technology and standards innovations. He is also responsible for international standards activities, particularly with regard to IHTSDO and HL7.
Mr. Giokas has more than three decades of experience in the information management and information technology field, having held positions at Sapient Corporation, notably as Vice-President and Managing Director of its Canadian subsidiary. He has held senior positions with Digital Equipment Corporation, including those of Consulting Engineer and Group Technical Director. And he has consulted on information technology strategy in a number of industries including health care, financial services, insurance and energy services.
Mr. Giokas has served as a board director of COACH, Canada’s health informatics association, and HL7 International Inc. He is on the Board of Stewards for Open Health Tools Inc. He holds two patents for software innovations and has one industrial design patent. Mr. Giokas has a Master’s of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music and was working on his PhD in Music Theory when he became interested in computer science. He has a Master of Science in Computer Science degree from Boston University.
