Biography
Dr. Pham Thanh Tung is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Global Health, and Public Health at the College of Health Sciences, VinUniversity, where he leads the Health, Environment, And Lifestyle Exposome Lab (HEAL Lab).
He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Hanoi Medical University (2015) and a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (2017), fully funded by the Vietnam Education Foundation. He then completed dual degrees at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health – a Ph.D. in Population Health Sciences with a specialization in Cancer Epidemiology and Cancer Prevention, and a Master of Science in Biostatistics (2024) – studying under Prof. Edward Giovannucci as a Harvey Fineberg Fellow in Cancer Prevention. At Harvard, he also served as Lead Teaching Fellow, Lead Statistical Consultant, and Curriculum Fellow for the Master of Public Health in Epidemiology program, and he continues to serve as a Department Associate in the Department of Epidemiology.
Dr. Tung’s work bridges rigorous quantitative methods with locally generated evidence to inform cancer and chronic disease prevention in Vietnam and other low- and middle-income countries. He has authored 36 peer-reviewed publications (Google Scholar H-index: 16; i10-index: 19), is Principal or Co-Principal Investigator on multiple VinUniversity Accelerating Research Excellence Program (AREP) and Seed Grant awards, and serves as an Associate Editor in Vietnam for Rapid Reviews: Infectious Diseases (UC Berkeley School of Public Health). He is a recipient of the VinUniversity Excellence in Innovation Award (2025–2026), the First Prize (Dang Van Ngu Prize) from Hanoi Medical University (2024), and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Excellence in Teaching Award (2024).
