What is Lovable?
The Harvard Chan AI Glossary
In our classes, we often pause to explain the ideas behind AI and the language used to describe it. These posts grew out of those conversations. They’re for anyone who would like to understand AI better, with no technical background assumed.
Lovable is an AI application-building environment in which people describe desired behavior in ordinary language and iteratively develop a web application. A web application is software used through a browser. Lovable is a product around models and development tools, not a foundation-model family.
A model is the trained component that interprets information and generates responses or code. Code is the set of instructions a computer executes. The building environment organizes that capability into a more guided experience, allowing the person to describe a change, examine the result and request another revision.
Imagine creating a simple website for a neighborhood book club. You might ask for a reading list, meeting dates and a form for suggestions. The visible page can make the idea easier to discuss. It can also reveal missing decisions, such as who may edit a meeting date or whether a suggestion should be visible to everyone.
Those decisions concern requirements: statements of what the product must do and conditions it must satisfy. Natural-language requests can help express them, but the application’s apparent completeness does not mean every requirement has been understood. A working form might still fail to save its contents or allow access that was not intended.
A prototype is a working draft created to explore an idea. Publishing makes a version accessible to users. Neither automatically establishes readiness for ongoing real use, which requires attention to stored information, permissions, errors and maintenance. A guided building interface does not remove those responsibilities.
The surrounding service may provide facilities for hosting, which means running the application on accessible computers, and connections to other services. The exact options depend on the product and account. Those arrangements should be understood separately from the AI model generating changes.
A public health team could explore a first version of a community-clinic registration journey using fictional participants and clearly labeled example sessions. The prototype might reveal whether people understand the form, can correct an entry and know what happens after submitting it. A working-looking page would not establish that a place has been reserved or that follow-up occurs. Lovable is an environment for making that idea tangible; the complete service and its information handling still need to be designed and tested.
