Seven healthy habits backed by Nurses’ Health Study research
For five decades, the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS), a collaboration between Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, has made important scientific contributions to understanding women’s health and chronic disease risk.
A May 2 Inc. article noted seven habits for a longer, healthier life that are backed by NHS research—and thanked its participants, now more than 300,000 women across three cohorts, who fill out diet and health questionnaires and contribute biological samples year after year.
The habits are:
- Don’t smoke.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
- Drink alcohol moderately, if at all.
- Eat a healthy diet prioritizing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins, and limiting processed foods and added sugar.
- Engage in a variety of physical activities.
- Drink two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day.
