Biography
Dr. Simon holds a Ph.D. in Economics/Industrial Organization from the University of Chicago (1985); an MBA in Finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1980) and a B.S. in Economics from John Carroll University. She has formerly an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois' Institute of Government and Public Affairs and the School of Public Health (1995-1999) She also has served as Senior Economist at the American Medical Association, Center for Health Policy Research where she directed analyses on the impact of managed care on the physician marketplace and on health system reform at the state and national level.
Dr. Simon's research focuses on the impact of managed care and the organization of health care markets. She is currently Principal Investigator of a 3-year, $3 million federally funded study examining how managed care has affected the economics of physician practice and influenced clinical decision- making. Dr. Simon's research has appeared in numerous health policy and economics journals, including Health Affairs, Health Services Research, The Journal of Health Economics, The American Economic Review and The Rand Journal of Economics, and Public Health Reports. Her recent research on the impact of managed care on physician earnings was reported in widely in the popular and business press, including features in The New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal. She has received the American Academy of Medical Administrators, Health Care Research Faculty Publication of the Year Award, for her work on hospital competition and costs.
