SUMMARY:Epidemiologic Methods and Data Science: Stronger Together
DESCRIPTION:Home / Virtual\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Epidemiologic methods often focus on a statistical model as the main step to getting “the” result. This talk will attempt to widen the perspective on epidemiologic methods. How do we develop and communicate our research plans in a team? How do the numbers from a regression model make it into a table in a manuscript? Practical examples will be shown how standard approaches from data science and free software packages can speed up our work in epidemiology and improve its reproducibility. As a corollary\, epidemiology-minded data science might not just need to be a core component in the training of the next generation of epidemiologists\, but can in turn also help teach epidemiologic methods.  \n\n\n\nBio: Konrad Stopsack leads the Department of Epidemiological Methods and Etiological Research at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS in Bremen\, Germany. His applied research focuses on molecular and cancer epidemiology. His methodologic and teaching interests include application and further development of epidemiologic methods to improve reproducibility\, interpretability\, and efficiency of epidemiologic studies.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Konrad H. SUMMARY:Fine-Mapping Causal Tissues and Genes at Disease-Associated Loci
DESCRIPTION:Home / Virtual\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Complex diseases often have distinct mechanisms spanning multiple tissues. We propose Tissue-Gene Fine-Mapping (TGFM)\, which infers the posterior probability (PIP) for each gene-tissue pair to mediate a disease locus by analyzing summary statistics and eQTL data; TGFM also assigns PIPs to non-mediated variants. TGFM accounts for co-regulation across genes and tissues and models uncertainty in cis-predicted expression models\, enabling correct calibration. We applied TGFM to 45 UK Biobank diseases/traits using eQTL data from 38 GTEx tissues. TGFM identified an average of 147 PIP>0.5 causal genetic elements per disease/trait\, of which 11% were gene-tissue pairs. Causal gene-tissue pairs identified by TGFM reflected both known biology (e.g.\, TPO-thyroid for Hypothyroidism) and biologically plausible findings (e.g.\, SLC20A2-artery aorta for Diastolic blood pressure). Application of TGFM to single-cell eQTL data from 9 cell types in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC)\, analyzed jointly with GTEx tissues\, identified 30 additional causal gene-PBMC cell type pairs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio: Alkes PriceDr. Price is a professor in the Program in Genetic Epidemiology and Statistical Genetics in the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard Chan\, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Biostatistics.  He is an associate member of the Program in Medical and Population Genetics at the Broad Institute\, and a member of the Program in Quantitative Genomics at Harvard Chan.  Dr. Price received a Ph.D. in mathematics and M.S.E. in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania.  His post-doctoral training was mentored by Dr. Pavel Pevzner in the department of computer science at UCSD and Dr. David Reich in the department of genetics at Harvard Medical School.  He has been a faculty member at Harvard Chan since 2008. Dr. Price’s research focuses on the development of statistical methods for uncovering the genetic basis of human disease\, and on the population genetics underlying these methods.  Areas of interest include functional components of disease heritability\, common vs. rare variant architectures of disease\, and disease mapping in structured populations.  \n\n\n\nBen StroberDr. Strober is a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health supervised by Dr. Alkes Price. SUMMARY:Policy Relevant Effects in Infectious Disease Studies
DESCRIPTION:Home / Virtual\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:   \n\n\n\nThe treatment of one individual often affects the outcomes of others. A canonical example occurs in infectious disease settings\, where vaccinating one individual can reduce disease transmission and thereby influence the health outcomes of others. This type of interference implies that individuals cannot plausibly be treated as independent and identically distributed (iid).  \n\n\n\nExtensive methodological research has recently addressed interference problems and the resulting violation of conventional iid assumptions. However\, despite growing interest in this topic\, there remains controversy over whether and when existing methods capture causal effects of practical interest\, particularly in clinical medicine and public health.  \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, I will present causal methodologies—motivated by infectious disease settings—for addressing interference. The central idea is to define estimands that are insensitive to the interference structure. This approach is not merely a workaround to avoid interference; rather\, I will argue that these estimands have a clear interpretation and can guide decisions by doctors and patients. Specifically\, these estimands can quantify vaccine waning and sieve effects\, as illustrated through examples concerning COVID-19 and HIV.  \n\n\n\nShort biography:   \n\n\n\nMats Stensrud\, MD Dr philos\, is an associate professor of biostatistics at the Institute of Mathematics at EPFL in Switzerland. His research focuses on methods for causal inference in medicine and epidemiology\, usually in settings with exposures and outcomes that depend on time.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Mats Stensrud\, MD Dr philos 					\n Associate Professor of Biostatistics\, Institute of Mathematics\, EPFL\, Switzerland \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Epidemiology\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

The EMPOWER program addresses that crisis with digital tools to support community health workers and nonspecialists in delivering high-quality\, evidence-based care for depression and other mental disorders. \n\n\nPioneered in India and rigorously evaluated\, EMPOWER trains\, supports\, and builds skills to develop a cadre of frontline mental health providers. This event will examine the EMPOWER model as the program is being scaled up in India and rolled out in several community-based settings in Texas. \n\n\nDownload our fact sheet here. \n\nSPEAKERS \n\n\nNatali Carmio\, EMPOWER adviser \n\n\nJohn Naslund\, instructor of global health and social medicine\, Harvard Medical School\, and codirector\, Mental Health for All Lab \n\n\nKatherine Sanchez\, director\, Patient and Community Engaged Research Center\, and Baylor Scott and White Research Institute director of diversity and inclusiveness in research \n\nMODERATOR \n\n\nJina Moore Ngarambe\, managing editor\, Harvard Public Health
