Following a postdoc at Harvard\, he led the Max Planck Research Group on Biological Physics and Evolutionary Dynamics in Göttingen. Since 2013\, he has been a faculty member in UC Berkeley’s Physics and IB. The unifying theme of his work is the concept of information; how communication evolves and how the process of evolution encodes information in genomes; how norms and institutions influence scholars’ research strategies and our scientific understanding of the world; and how citations and other scholarly activity can be used to navigate the overwhelming volume of scholarly literature. Register for the seminar here. \n\n\nDr. Eva Harris is Professor and Chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology\, Director of the Center for Global Public Health\, and Chair of the Infectious Diseases and Immunity PhD Program in the School of Public Health at the University of California\, Berkeley. She has developed a multidisciplinary approach to study the molecular virology\, pathogenesis\, immunology\, epidemiology\, clinical aspects and control of dengue\, Zika and chikungunya\, the most prevalent mosquito-borne viral diseases in humans. Her work addresses immune correlates of protection and pathogenesis and viral and host factors that modulate disease severity\, using in vitro approaches\, animal models\, and research involving human populations. \n\nRecommended readings\n\n\n\nKatzelnick et al. (2020). Zika virus infection enhances future risk of severe dengue disease\n\n\nZambrana et al. (2023). The in-person portion will be held in Kresge G3 and does not require registration. Register for the seminar here. \n\n\nDr. Shioda is an infectious disease epidemiologist and veterinarian. Her research aims to advance human and animal health by identifying evidence-based interventions for the control of infectious diseases. Her work centers on two main areas: 1) vaccine epidemiology and 2) One Health with climate change. In the field of vaccine epidemiology\, which she will focus on during her talk\, Dr. Shioda aims to shape vaccine policies by obtaining robust estimates of the population-level impact of vaccines. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tokyo\, her MPH at Emory University\, and her Ph.D. at Yale University. \n\nRecommended readings\n\n\n\nShioda et al. (2023).
