SUMMARY:Epidemiology of Autism: Substantive Results and Methodological Issues
DESCRIPTION:Home / HSPH\, Kresge 502\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHSPH\, Kresge 502\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Since the mid 1960’s\, 165 prevalence surveys of autism were conducted worldwide and their main findings will first be summarized. While the contribution of genetic factors to autism etiology is high\, the increase in autism prevalence has raised concerns about additional contribution of environmental factors. Autism risk has been statistically associated with myriads of exposures but\, with few exceptions\, the causal nature of these associations remains unproven. Estimates are often confounded and results do not replicate across samples and study designs. We review recent findings on select risk factors to illustrate current methodological issues relevant to this research domain.  \n\n\n\nBio: Dr. Eric Fombonne trained in child and adolescent psychiatry in France. He held academic appointments at INSERM (Paris\, France)\, at the Institute of Psychiatry (London\, UK)\, at McGill University (Canada)\, and at OHSU (Portland\, Oregon\, USA). He has a long experience of clinical work with children with autism and their families\, and of research on this population\, especially using epidemiological methods. He published over 380 articles and 50 chapters in books. He was Associate Editor of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders (1994-2004) and is currently  Joint Editor of Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n \n Eric Fombonne\, MD \n Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry\, Oregon Health Science University\n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDepartment of Epidemiology\n\n\n\nMaternal and Child Health Center of Excellence\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:Pandemic Preparedness: The Role of Virus-Restricted Vaccines and Universal Antiviral Drugs
DESCRIPTION:Home / HSPH\, Kresge 502\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHSPH\, Kresge 502\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBRIEF ABSTRACT  \n\n\n\nPandemic Preparedness as a concept has four unknowns to deal with: 1) how often can we expect a pandemic causing excess mortality and morbidity to occur\, 2) what virus will cause it?\, 3) are panzoonotic infections a harbinger of a human pandemic driven by human to human transmission\, and 4) does the change in climate increases the frequency of panzoonotics and pandemics? Recent data on 12\,000 mammalian virus-host interactions suggest that enveloped viruses are the most likely cause of the next pandemic and among those a segmented enveloped RNA virus with a high rate of antigenic drift and shift\, maximizing viral escape from immune interventions\, may present the biggest threat. Currently members of the panzoonotic H5 virus family are spreading rapidly among birds and a wide range of mammal species. Evidence will be presented that a combination of an easy-to-use universal antiviral drug for the first 100 days able to prevent human-to-human transmission and a series of prime and boost virus family-specific vaccines thereafter protecting against severe human disease by consecutive and fast evolving virus strains and clades may present the best of options to prevent catastrophic events.   \n\n\n\nSHORT BIO  \n\n\n\nJaap Goudsmit has an MD and PhD degree from the  University of Amsterdam.
