Please email Claire Street at cstreet@hsph.harvard.edu to register. \n\n\nDescription: As days get hotter and summers longer\, we do not yet know what the impact of this extreme heat exposure will be on the lives and livelihoods of the poorest – the world’s labor force that works outdoors or in poorly ventilated indoor settings. How do global averages of 1.5 and 2 translate to the lived experiences of those most at risk? Our team is working on quantifying the impact of heat and humidity in the microenvironment that the poor work and live in\, on their health\, wellbeing\, and wages. In collaboration with hundreds of workers from the Self Employed Women’s Association\, our interdisciplinary team at the Salata South Asia Climate Adaptation Cluster is following hundreds of workers across indoor and outdoor occupations using microsensors\, biosensors\, and biomarkers. \n\n\nModerator: \n\n\nJacqueline Bhabha\, JD\, MSc\, FXB Director of Research \n\n\nJacqueline Bhabha is a Professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health\, the Jeremiah Smith Jr. Lecturer in Law at Harvard Law School\, and an Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. She is also the Director of Research at the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University. She received a first class honors degree and an M.Sc. from Oxford University\, and a J.D. from the College of Law in London. SUMMARY:When does social media satisfy the need to belong? Loneliness and Digital Thriving
DESCRIPTION:Home / Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Building\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrancois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Building\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, May 1st\, from 1-1:50 PM in FXB G12 and online\, join us for “When does social media satisfy the need to belong? Loneliness and Digital Thriving“\, a seminar led by Dr. Jeffrey Hall\, and the sixth installment in our Loneliness and Well-being Seminar Series. \n\n\nHas the rise of social media created the loneliness epidemic? Social media use is both a way to spend one’s leisure time and a form of interpersonal communication. Understanding its influence on loneliness requires a more complex understanding of why people use social media and whether it is capable of satisfying the need to belong. This talk will challenge common presumptions of the grave harm of social media and explore why (and for whom) legitimate concerns of its effects on loneliness remain. \n\n\nDr. Jeffrey Hall is a Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Kansas\, and currently serves as Visiting Scholar at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at the Harvard Law School. Dr. Hall studies the interplay between online and offline communication in the context of personal relationships and social interactions. His 2020 book\, Relating Through Technology (Cambridge University Press)\, received two Top Book Awards from the National Communication Association. His new book The Social Biome (Yale University Press\, 2025) focuses on the importance of friendship\, high quality communication\, and making time for one another. He is the director of the Relationships and Technology Lab at the University of Kansas. \n\n\nRSVP \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy

SUMMARY:Equity in Policies and Interventions to Advance Social Connection
DESCRIPTION:Home / Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Building\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrancois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Building\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Type \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, April 10th\, from 1-1:50 pm in FXB G12 or online\, join us for “Equity in Policies and Interventions to Advance Social Connection” a seminar led by Dr. Ichiro Kawachi\, and the latest installment in our Loneliness and Well-being Seminar Series. \n\n\nIn 2023\, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory drawing attention to an “epidemic of loneliness and social isolation” and called for a national strategy to advance social connectedness. The advisory also emphasized that “diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and accessibility are critical components of any such strategy. It must recognize that everyone is impacted by social connection\, but that some groups may be more disproportionally impacted by some policies. Thus\, policymakers must give focused attention to reducing disparities in risk and ensuring equal access to benefits.” To start the conversation about a national policy to advance social connections\, Dr. Kawachi will address two questions prompted by the Surgeon General’s advisory – first\, what types of social connection should we seek to strengthen? – strong ties versus weak ties\, bonding versus bridging social ties; and second\, how can policies address inequities in access to social connections by socioeconomic status and race? \n\n\nThis seminar will be led by Dr. Ichiro Kawachi\, MB.Ch.B.\, Ph.D. Dr. Kawachi currently serves as the John L. Loeb and Frances Lehman Loeb Professor of Social Epidemiology in the Social & Behavioral Sciences Department at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\, where he has taught since 1992. His research focuses on the social determinants of health and health equity. \n\n\nRSVP: https://harvard.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9Hu3N75VnvPejFc \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Unleash your potential at Harvard Chan School. \n In addition to our degree programs\, we offer highly targeted programs through our Advanced Learning Academy\, directed and taught by Harvard faculty. \n \n \n \n Degree Programs \n \n \n \n How to Apply \n \n \n \n Advanced Learning Academy
